House of Dance Company will be a selected Performance Group that will represent our House of Dance at community events, Dance Competitions and Conventions.
Thursday June 27th - 4:00-7:00pm
Auditions will be divided by age group.
Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to sign up and receive a Try-out number.
4:00-5:00 pm- Group 1 (1st - 4th gr) *Must be at least 6 yrs old.
5:00-6:00pm- Group 2 (5th- 8th gr)
6:00-7:00pm- Group 3 (9th-12th gr)
*These Group recommendations will be for Try-out purposes only. Dance competition numbers will be grouped either by skill levels, age or performance style. Dancers are welcome to Audition in an older age gap if they desire. Please see below for skills requirements per Audition Group.
All auditions will be held inside Room A at Gaby Lucas House of Dance | 18845 W. 158th St, Olathe, KS.
Room B will be available to dancers to deposit their belongings and to use the floor to warm-up and stretch on their own.
No one other than Judges and Dancers will be allowed to enter Room A while try-outs are in session.
WHO CAN TRY-OUT?
Any HOUSE OF DANCE dancer 6 yr planning to enroll in our 2019-2020 Dance Session is eligible to try-out for our Company.
All Company members are required to be enrolled in Jazz Technique and/or Ballet Technique and attend Company Technique Class once a month during Company rehearsal. (Included in your fee)
WHAT TO WEAR?
All participants must wear black tops and black bottoms. (Leotard or fitted top/ Leggings, tights or fitted shorts)
All dancers will be given a number to pin to the front of their tops.
Bring Jazz shoes or Lyrical Shoes.
You may bring your Tap shoes if interested in Trying out for Tap Routines.
Hair is required to be pulled back into a sleek pony tail or sleek hair bun. (No fly-away hairs please)
Auditions will include:
A brief progression across the floor to showcase their technical skills
A small combination to showcase their dance performance presence
Any dancer wishing to perform a Solo number during our 2019-2020 season will be encourage to prepare a 32 count solo performance during auditions.
WHO WILL LEAD TRY-OUTS?
Miss Gaby Lucas and Miss Sarah Hauber will lead dancers into progressions and choreography combinations.
Our Judging panel will include 3 Professional regional choreographer/ performers and Collegiate dance coaches.
TECHNICAL JAZZ/LYRICAL SKILLS MIGHT INCLUDE:
Group 1:Chasses, Single Pirouettes, Lindys, Straight Battements(kicks), Front Leaps, Chaines, Fan kicks.
Group 2:All of the above in addition to: Double Pirouettes, Leg splits, X leaps or Center Leaps, Single Coupe Pirouettes, Tilts/Tilt Jumps, Illusions, Various slides, Pas de bourres, Preparation to Turns in Second, Pique Turns.
Group 3:All of the above in addition to: Double Coupe Pirouettes, Turns in Second, Calypssos, “C” turns, Attitude Pirouettes, Turning Centers, Grand Ronde Jambe Sautés, Various Leaps (Surprise, Reversed), Double stack jumps, Axle/Tuck Jumps/Turns.
EXPECTATIONS AT TRY-OUTS:
All dancers are expected to show a positive attitude and an open disposition to learn.
No verbal communication will be allowed with the judges.
No Food or Drink (other than water) will be allowed inside Studio A.
All dancers must arrive early to prepare for try-outs, warm-up on their own and fill out a tryout form.
Results of tryouts will be e-mailed directly to parents including a copy of their Company Contract, Schedule of practices, Company classes and Competition dates.
Judges will grade dancers in the following categories:
Appearance: Hair sleeked back, Appropriateness of clothing.
Applying corrections and recovering from mistakes.
Positive attitude while learning.
Full movements, limb and torso extensions, pointing of feet.
Correct body alignment, core strength and balance.
Flexibility through torso.
Correct use of plies for jumping and landing.
Correct use of spot while turning.
Execution of steps.
Energy when performing.
Musicality and Memory.
Engaging the audience while performing.
*All scores will be confidential.
IF I MAKE IT WHAT WILL BE MY TIME COMMITTMENT?
Besides attending their regular studio classes, company members will be required to attend HODC Workshop and Choreography Camp (July 22nd-26th) and FREE UP 2 Sundays of every month 4:00-7:00pm. (September – April) for Company Class/Rehearsal.
One- 2 day Dance Convention in the Fall
2 - full weekends for Competition Circuits in the Spring.
Not all dancers will be required to attend every rehearsal.
Specific Schedules will be e-mailed to every parent after Company dance numbers are formed.
All Company Members should reserve the following dates for our 1st Parent Meeting and HODC Team Choreography Workshop.
July 15th- 7:00pm - Contract Signed, 1st Company Meeting, and 1st Payment Due.
July 24th- 26th-HODC Team Workshop at House of Dance
WHAT IS THE ESTIMATED COST?
A general, rough estimate per company member costs about $900 per year (+/-)
All fees will be divided into affordable equal monthly installments. This fee already includes:
Competition Fees- $210-$300 (per year)
Includes 2 different group dances (small or large) at 2 local competitions.
Convention- $250 (1 per year)
Includes 2 days of Master Classes with international renowned Choreographers/Instructors.
Choreography/Rehearsal/Guest artist Fees-
Includes Guest Artists, Choreography, Rehearsals, Music Editing, Coaching during Competitions, Conventions and Community presentations.
Costumes, Accessories & Props-
For every group dance
Professional Competition Pictures-
For at least one Competition Circuit
HODC Team Preparation and Choreography Workshop- ($200 due July 15th)
Fee does NOT include:
HODC Company Jacket - $50
All individual official fees, payment plans and due dates will be e-mailed to Company parents in their Welcome Packet. There will NOT be any hidden fees.

Both parents and students are welcome and encouraged to attend.
